Spring 2014 signals an important phase for sustainably-minded initiatives regarding technology and digital approaches at FUA. The changes address a double purpose: First and foremost, to reduce the amount of environmental waste. Secondly, to create more immediate and functional forms of sustainable communication and information sharing between students, faculty, and staff. Luca Pedocchi, Manager of the Information and Communication Technology department at FUA, provides details and facts.

Campus Connections
FUA is currently composed of seven distinct campus locations in the city of Florence. Each campus has a distinct internet connection in order to properly and quickly process its distinct activities online. The campuses are also connected as a greater network via a high speed intranet that facilitates FUA computing services throughout the entire organization. The internal network serves to provide the same services, means of access, and work sharing from any point within the seven campuses.

Access, Simplified
FUA users include students, faculty, and staff members. The ICT Department has created a single user account with varying levels of utility for each FUA user. The obvious advantage for this type of account simplifies the computing activity of users in a more streamlined approach. Each user has a unique user name and password to access the resources provided by the institution, such as shared servers, database activity, individual web pages managed by each faculty member, and remote classroom management. Faculty members are already utilizing 100% digitalized course registers, for example.

What's the Benefit?
The above developments result in a significant reduction of both hard copy material usage and the ensuing communications necessary to follow institutional operations, management, and project works. From both a collective and an individual perspective, the user access allows for greater content sharing from any campus location. Documents can be swapped and consulted more rapidly, updates applied more immediately and on a real time basis.

Future Development
Luca Pedocchi shares that further implementations will include intelligent scanners for document tagging as well as an improved archiviation method that automatically drives documents into specific servers for easy retrieval. Also on the way for FUA campuses is a 40mbps fiber optic connection, which will not only offer top-level networking velocity but also further optimize computer management from remote locations.
